DIFFERENT TYPES OF ENVIRO™ COVER FILM THAT SUITS YOUR NEED

Enviro™ Cover is an environmentally friendly and cost saving alternative to using earthen cover materials, foam, sprays or removable tarp coverings. Enviro™ Cover conserves valuable airspace while reducing operation costs and provides utmost barrier protection that can be applied in any adverse climatic condition, most notably rain and snow.

Enviro™ Cover provides a complete, effective and continuous closure of the active working face of a landfill through to the next deposit of waste. The impermeable nature of Enviro™ Cover encourages water runoff and effectively controls the infiltration of precipitation, restricting the generation of leachate and preventing the escape of odors and air emissions. After it is buried in the landfill Enviro™ Cover gradually degrades and will not impede waste digestion or bio gas collection.

Available in varying grades to accommodate different cover period requirements,

ECONOMICS & PERFORMANCE BENEFITS

  • As a degradable geosynthetic tarp-like film, Enviro™ Cover creates an impermeable barrier with excellent performance qualities that does not require removal before landfill operations begin again the next day. It continually prevents rainwater infiltration to minimize moisture within the landfill, decreasing leachate generation beyond the daily and extended cover period requirements. This allows more control over leachate management, including less cost associated with leachate treatment.
  • Enviro™ Cover’s impermeable barrier continuously prevents the escape of odors and gaseous emissions, while also minimizing the risk of fire by preventing air infiltration into the landfill at the surface and improving the management of gas accumulation and collection.
  • Enviro™ Cover occupies practically zero “air space” which equals substantial savings in landfill capacity, extending the life of the landfill and permitting additional revenues associated with these space savings.
  • The Enviro™ Cover System saves operating costs of importing, storage, moving, spreading, compacting and recovery of soils or inert materials. Its application and performance is not effected by adverse climatic conditions as with other cover materials, making their use more difficult and time consuming.
  • The Enviro™ Cover System increases equipment and manpower efficiency with the rapid coverage process, reducing landfill equipment capital cost, manpower time and related expenses.
  • The Enviro™ Cover System simplifies and expedites the daily covering operation - no post application requirements for applicator equipment are needed, nor is retrieval or removal of the cover required before the start of the next day’s operations.
  • Enviro™ Cover is a degradable non-toxic geosynthetic tarp-like film which provides continuous and effective environmental control as a barrier on the surface, yet will not impede leachate and biogas movement or collection as it degrades buried within the landfill.
  • Enviro™ Cover effectively controls and prevents disease vectors, fires, odors, blowing litter and scavenging from both an environmental and performance perspective.
  • Onset of degradation in the film is varied depending on which product is desired, whether the need be for daily use or extended cover periods. This allows for prolonged coverage for temporary or emergency relocation of the working face to other areas while continually providing barrier effectiveness to facilitate leachate and gas management/control.
  • Enviro™ Cover provides an aesthetically pleasing barrier of protection between landfill waste and the surrounding environment.
  • Enviro™ Cover can be deployed in all climatic conditions including heavy rain, snow, winds and freezing temperatures.
  • Enviro™ Cover Deployers are either self-propelled or will easily attach to the blade or bucket of a landfill’s prime mover.

DEGRADATION LANDFILL MECHANICS

Enviro™ Cover is used as an alternative to earthen cover material to comply with the US Environmental Protection Agency requirement to cover the landfill at the end of each work day. It does not require removal and provides continuous coverage before the next layer of waste is placed.

Enviro™ Cover meets this US EPA requirement to control disease vectors, odors, fires, blowing litter and scavenging without presenting a threat to human health or the environment.

Enviro™ Cover is engineered with good tear strength, puncture resistance and elongation characteristics for stretching over uneven working face surfaces. Upon burial, it will degrade in the landfill and will not impede biogas and leachate collection.

Inside The Landfill

Enviro Cover Degradation 01Enviro™ Cover film is made with EPI’s TDPA® (Totally Degradable Plastic Additive) technology. The film will start to degrade through exposure to heat, mechanical stress and/or ultra violet light. Upon burial in a landfill, the film will continue to degrade in the presence of decaying garbage.

As degradation proceeds, Enviro™ Cover loses its mechanical properties becoming brittle and fragmented, breaking into particles that allow the biogas and leachate to flow to collection systems.

The degradation of the Enviro™ Cover produces no toxic by-products.

Enviro Cover Degradation 02

Biogas / Leachate Movement

The use of some waste covering materials such as low permeability soil can lead to the formation of impermeable barriers within the landfill. These intervening barriers can result in undesirable lateral migration of biogas and leachate and compromise the effectiveness of collection causing potential health and environmental problems.

Because the Enviro™ Cover is degradable, it allows the biogas and leachate to flow through unhindered for collection.

Enviro Biogas and Leachate Movement

WATER RUNOFF AND LEACHATE MANAGEMENT

Enviro™ Cover is a degradable polyethylene film and until degradation, is an impermeable geosynthetic material without interconnected pores. It therefore does not allow fluids to flow through, forming an excellent continuous fluid barrier at the surface of the working face.

Placement of the Enviro™ Cover using ballast to anchor the overlapping panels creates a compression type seal that can capture 98% of precipitation, encouraging water runoff and preventing infiltration of moisture. The non-removable geosynthetic does not necessitate retrieval before the start of the next day’s operation, providing a continuous effective barrier to facilitate leachate management and to prevent its uncontrolled generation.

As the Enviro™ Cover degrades within the landfill the film becomes perforated, granulated and permeable, which allows leachate and gas to flow freely. This enhances the proper migration and contact of nutrients, microorganisms, moisture and biodegradable material necessary for waste conversion and production of LFG (landfill gas) - for collection, flaring and/or energy production.

Enviro™ Cover’s degradability after burial reduces the risk of sideways fluid migration and side-slope outbreaks or seeps at unintended points, which can all be caused by using low permeability earthen or other compacted materials as the daily cover.

ODOR / GAS CONTROL

Enviro™ Cover as an impermeable and non-removable geosynthetic tarp-like polyethylene film which provides a continuous barrier between waste and the environment that remains in place until the next layer of waste is deposited on top. This effectively contains and minimizes undesirable odors and greenhouse gas emissions from escaping the landfill without interruption.

Since the Enviro™ Cover film degrades when it is buried in the landfill, it will not impede the desired free movement of gas below the surface which is necessary for capitalizing on its collection.

BENEFITS OF ENVIRO COVER SYSTEM VS. SOIL COVER

  1. Enviro™ Cover is a uniquely degradable, nonreusable, geosynthetic alternative daily cover that does not require removal before the next day’s operations begin and provides an uninterrupted impermeable barrier between waste and the environment to control disease vectors, fires, odors, blowing litter and scavenging until the next layer of waste is deposited, unlike using soil cover which is permeable.
  2. Air space savings. The use of the Enviro™ Cover System significantly extends the lifespan of the landfill compared to using soil cover (see airspace comparison chart on page 3). Enviro™ Cover takes up almost zero volume versus the required minimum of 6 inches of soil cover that regulatory requirements stipulate is the minimum thickness to effectively cover the working face, which is primarily dependent on the operator and smoothness of the surface so becomes an important operational and economic consideration.
  3. Daily cover costs are considerably lower using the Enviro™ Cover System. There are reduced operating costs due to the expense of time, space and manpower needed to import, move, spread, compact, recover and store large soil quantities. Many landfill soils suitable for daily cover are not readily available, therefore must be purchased and transported to the site. This increases operational cost, traffic in and around the landfill and the generation of dust. The manpower and equipment required in obtaining, storing and placing soil as daily cover may not be the most economical use of these resources.
  4. Enviro™ Cover’s continuous impermeable barrier provides an excellent water runoff system and minimizes moisture within the landfill, which in turn significantly reduces leachate generation compared to using soil as a cover which can have permeability gaps caused by uneven soil distribution. Certain soils used as daily cover may also not be very effective in shedding rainwater from the working face, thereby increasing moisture infiltration and potential leachate production.
  5. Enviro™ Cover’s uninterrupted, impermeable barrier effectively controls air and gas emissions - methane gas remains trapped within the landfill until it can be collected for utilization and further processing.
  6. As Enviro™ Cover’s degrades within the landfill the film becomes perforated, granulated and permeable, which allows leachate and gas to flow freely. This enhances the proper migration and contact of nutrients, microorganisms, moisture and biodegradable material necessary for waste conversion and production of LFG (landfill gas) - for collection, flaring and/or energy production. By contrast, daily soil cover with high clay/silt content can easily become compacted, trapping leachate to become leachate “seeps”, as well as disrupting the flow of methane gas to collection systems by creatingintervening barriers within the landfill.
